I’m furious with pro-ana people ripping out quotes from Wintergirls and posting them to help others starve themselves. Isolating a line from a book that distorts the meaning of that book is obscene. That’s what book censors do.
Stop that shit now.
Anorexia is the most fatal of all mental illnesses. There is nothing empowering or cute or sexy about it. It’s a disease that kills, ruins lives, and ravages families. I wrote Wintergirls to show the horrifying damage of the disease, and how people struggling with it can reach for help and hope.
A lot of pro-ana people feel lost and depressed and lonely. I understand those feelings. Been there, lived that. They think they’ve found a community that will support them. I understand that, too. But listen up: people who truly support you don’t want you dead.
I don’t care what your body size is. I care about the health of your body and of your soul. I want you to feel supported and loved and valued. I want you to be strong enough to claim your place in the world, and to make the world even better.
Help me reach out to people who are trapped in their eating disorders. Help me reach out to the pro-ana community with love and show them other communities that can help them through rough times.
Let’s stop buying into the bullshit fed to us by media empires and fashion designers and other corporate overlords. Let’s stop hating on each other for the size of our thighs or our butts.
It’s the size of your heart that matters.
PS: To those saying that being against pro-ana is another form of body hate: it’s not. I’m against smoking meth and shooting heroin for the same reasons - they are addictive dangerous behaviors that kill people.
What do you think?
“A Tale of Two Cities,” Charles Dickens. (via dandandeenio)
It’s a pretty excellent tale y’all. ;)
“Our house was small, and when you grow up with domestic violence in a confined space you learn to gauge, very precisely, the temperature of situations. I knew exactly when the shouting was done and a hand was about to be raised – I also knew exactly when to insert a small body between the fist and her face, a skill no child should ever have to learn. Curiously, I never felt fear for myself and he never struck me, an odd moral imposition that would not allow him to strike a child. The situation was barely tolerable: I witnessed terrible things, which I knew were wrong, but there was nowhere to go for help. Worse, there were those who condoned the abuse. I heard police or ambulancemen, standing in our house, say, “She must have provoked him,” or, “Mrs Stewart, it takes two to make a fight.” They had no idea. The truth is my mother did nothing to deserve the violence she endured. She did not provoke my father, and even if she had, violence is an unacceptable way of dealing with conflict. Violence is a choice a man makes and he alone is responsible for it.”

She’s been missing for about a month now. Since early August.
She was last with the guy that’s in the pictures above. He claims that his name is Brian. 22 years old. And lives in Cypress, Cali. But the thing is, recently her family found out from running a background check on him, that he’s not who he says he is. So everything he’s told her is a lie.
We’re all really worried about her. The last time I saw her was at a get together my mom had, if not at Victoria (her best friend) birthday dinner. Julie’s a really sweet girl. She met this “Brian” guy online, over Tumblr. This very site I’m posting this on. So PLEASE, if anyone recognizes him or knows him or ANYTHING. Such as phone number, his Tumblr, FB, literally ANYTHING. PLEASE contact me in anyway. Or contact her best friend Victoria. (I will post our contact information below)
Please reblog this. As many times as you want. I want to help get the news out. All three of our families are really worried about her safety. We just want to find her and get her to come back home. It would mean a lot to us for any of you to help us. Thank you.
JULIE; If you see this, please don’t just ignore it. We really do want you to come back home.

So, in case anyone was wondering, I’ve been writing quite a lot of posts for The Book Lantern recently, which has been very time consuming, but also very fun.
I recently embarked on a series of deconstructions of “Skip Beat!”, of which the first post is up today. If you’re interested, do check it out!
So I said this on twitter, but I thought I should repeat it here.
The Internet seems to have exploded because of “The Casual Vacancy”, J.K. Rowling’s new “adult” book. From a quick glance, it seems that everyone is comparing it somehow to Potter, and that at least 50% of the readers are unhappy with it.
I don’t know if I should read this book, but I admire Rowling for deciding to write something completely different from her previous works, instead of milking that cash cow dry.
I mean, how many authors continued “finished” series or stretched an existing trilogy because they “still had a lot of stories to tell”? Christopher Paolini and Becca Fitzpatrick both turned their trilogies into four book cycles. Cassandra Clare’s shadowhunter books are a whooping 12 with the newest trilogy, not to mention countless snippets posted online. Robert Jordan didn’t even get to finish his “Wheel of Time” books, and that’s a sad, sad thing indeed.
Shouldn’t we be happy that Harry and his friends had their ending, all nice and wrapped with a bow? Or would you rather be like some fans of George R. R. Martin, who think his only purpose in life is to write the next book in “A Song of Ice and Fire”?
(trigger warning for depression, substance abuse, suicide, and for just being really fucking sad)
I was inspired to post this because of the submission about the girl who aborted her child with Tay-Sachs. I wish I could have been so lucky.
My husband Alan and I found out…
This might possibly be the most heart-wrenching thing I’ve ever read. Stories like this are why feminists must keep fighting. WE MUST.
I know I’m not Tumblr famous and I don’t know how many people are going to actually see this but for those that will see this, I just want them to know that this sort of thing happens all the time at my old school, and I’m getting sick of it. They tried to contact that media and it doesn’t seem to be working. I just want people to know that we need this to stop. If we could do something to help this situation, I don’t know what but something, it would help a lot. Nobody deserves this.
Do you have more information, like the contact information of the school superintendent or local media?
